The Rock Wall Climb at Waypoint 2 makes Pronghorn Trail one of the harder and more popular trails in the Hungry Valley SVRA (State Vehicular Recreation Area). Hungry Valley is just outside of the Gorman and Frazier Park mountain communities in Southern California. Over 130 miles of motorcycle, ATV and 4x4 trails spiderweb throughout this 19,000 acre park. The park's trails include hill climbs, sand washes, wide dirt trails, narrow off-camber shelf roads and a designated 4 wheel drive practice area.

Trail Difficulty and Assessment

Trail Navigation

Pronghorn Trail starts as an easy, soft, sandy road, breaking off from the easy-going Pipeline Road. At about a quarter mile in, the ease of this trail fades. Gradual increases in elevation turn into short saddle sections, tight hill-cut turns and increasingly bumpy terrain. Once you think you have gotten the hang of this trail it reminds you otherwise with the Rock Wall Climb at Waypoint 2. This climb has no bypass. Go up it or turn around. Once up and over, the hardest part is behind you, but there are still more climbs, descents, tight turns and narrow shelves to come. Between Quail Pass at Waypoint 4 and the Steep Drop at Waypoint 6, Pronghorn Trail becomes a narrow shelf road zig-zagging through steep mountain sides. While not difficult, the thought of going off the side here is enough to add some pucker factor. Hungry Valley SVRA park fees are $5 for the day or $10 overnight per vehicle and whatever you might be towing / hauling. The closest gas stations are at the Gorman exit, off interstate 5, less then 2 miles from the north entrance to the park. Hungry Valley SVRA map More information on Hungry Valley SVRA
