Located northeast of Florence, Box Canyon is a scenic trail that passes through a spectacular, narrow canyon with geological features and bright, colorful vegetation you wouldn't commonly associate with the desert, such as acarosporaceae fungi. Beyond the sheer, towering canyon walls, drivers can find petroglyphs, and historical stagecoach stops making this trail a truly unique Arizona offroad experience. A favorite amongst many offroad enthusiasts, this trail is a popular access point to many other trails within the Florence Junction area.

Trail Difficulty and Assessment

Trail Navigation

Box Canyon is a straight-through trail that can be run in either direction and starts out very similar on both ends. Starting from the south, the trail travels along a graded dirt road, passing many camping areas. Slowly the trail enters into a sandy wash as you work your way toward the mouth of the canyon. Once inside the narrow box canyon, the road surface becomes mildly rocky and passes a few optional rock obstacles. The trail can change with each passing rain storm, but generally, any stock 4-wheel drive vehicle is suitable for the entire length of this trail. Box Canyon is a very popular trail, and passing opportunities can be limited in a few short sections. The northern end of the trail leads to numerous other off-road trails where users can spend a whole day and even a full week exploring.

Traveling through Box Canyon does require an Arizona State Trust Land permit.

State Trust Land Permits can be found at the Arizona State Trust Land Department website under recreational permit forms, individual/family permit.

Box Canyon is prone to flash flooding. Stay off of this trail if rain is expected. The walls of the canyon are too steep to climb out of if caught in a flash flood.

Oh my goodness, make this place a priority. Absolutely beautiful. The narrows section only takes about 10 minutes to drive thru, but it's a stunner.

We ran this trail in conjunction with Martinez Canyon and Rincon Road for a great day of Jeeping! Box Canyon can’t be missed if you’re in this area. The drive through the canyon is pretty easy, but leave time soak in the views. This is a fun way to enter or exit the OHV area.

This was a very fun trail. I did the trail in a Lifted Toyota Sequoia. There were a couple spots were I wasn't sure if I was going to fix, it was very tight but I did, I didn't even need a spotter. There was a small stream of water running down pretty much the whole trail. I was a little early but I think if you timed this trip with the sun about to set you could get some cool view from the canyon walls. I would do this trail again if I'm ever in the area.

This trail is awesome and provides some sweet views. There was a little bit of running water so it was nice to hear and see it run through. It does get pretty tight so full size trucks SUVs I would recommend to get a spotter out to make sure you can squeeze. I have a 2 door short bed ‘03 Silverado that had a couple of inches of wiggle room on each side at certain spots. Only negative I would say was the amount of people blazing through on their UTVs. Granted I did go on a 3-day weekend (didn’t realize until the morning of) so not sure what any other weekend is like.

Beautiful trail. There was some water moving through but nothing bigger than puddles. The overall trail difficulty was alot easier than some others rated 3/4. More like a 1or 2 on the easy side, but if the water is high, then a 4.
