Vallecito Creek Road (02/19/2023)
Super easy, even for an AWD crossover. Small pockets of deep sand, but mostly it was compact and washboards. Very scenic this time of year with the flowers starting to bloom. Used this to connect with other trails in the area for an overnight adventure.
Indian Canyon North (02/19/2023)
Easy trail for anyone to do. Get here early to snag the camp spot at the end if your looking for seclusion.
Indian Gorge (02/18/2023)
Very easy, very scenic. If your luck enough to snag one of the very few camp spots along this route you’ll rest easy in your seclusion. The colors were vibrant this time of year and plenty of critters scampering around to entertain the littles.
Indian Canyon South (02/18/2023)
The theme for Indian Gorge seems to be ESR and beauty. This section was easy going and scenic. We didn’t see many places to camp, but there is a spot at the end that may be good.
Anza Borrego Metal Sculptures (02/03/2023)
This is great outing for the family and no need for 4wd, any vehicle could do this dirt road. We came through after camping elsewhere in the park and it was a great time. The kids loved having lunch with the elephants. Disappointed to see they had most of the sculptures on the north end open to foot traffic only. No sure if it’s been that way for long, but I’ve seen pictures of rigs with the serpent sculpture and was looking forward to taking my own. Still worth the drive if you’ve got Little’s and not-so-Little’s too.
Fish Creek Trail - Anza Borrego (01/21/2023)
Fish Creek never disappoints! From the scenic views, soft sand, and rocky areas there is definitely a little bit of everything. While a stock 4wd or a mild build would be best to take advantage of everything this trail has to offer, there is still plenty to see and do in an AWD crossover. My only limitation was ground clearance in the few times I have been out here, but I'm still not done exploring the area! The trail and it's many connectors can be very popular which leads to some busy intersects at times so watch out for oncoming vehicles. If you are looking to camp, the Fish Creek Campground near the entry off Split Mountain Road is a great spot with easy access and vault toilets. Spots are spacious, but limited. I recommend making a day, or better yet a weekend, to take it all in. The kids love the high canyon walls and sense of adventure while driving through. Use the Trails Offroad App on your phone and download guides for offline use as cell service is spotty at best.
Mortero Wash North - Anza Borrego (12/10/2022)
Very short and very easy trail. Not much out this way, but can connect to get to the Dolomite Mine. If your in the area and have a novice driver this would be a good confidence builder. There is a small wash out between Waypoints 1 & 2, but nothing that can't be navigated with ease. There were sections of soft sand as you get closer to Waypoint 3, but again, nothing that can't be navigated with ease.
2N02 - Burns Canyon (11/06/2022)
This was a great trail to take and make a great day with the family! We started at Pioneertown and made our way through. We went after recent storms and am not sure if that created new obstacles for AWD CUVs, but we definitely were challenged in a few spots. Nothing we couldn't get through, but with one very novice driver it made for some tense moments. Remember 4wd Rating of 1 equals AWD CUV rating of 3, and it multiplies from there. Lots of skid plate and poor approach/departure angle scrapping, but nothing to worry about. Waypoint 25 offered a chance to lift a wheel on the crossovers, but 4wd truck or SUV should have more than enough articulation. Scenery is beautiful and so much to explore. We will certainly be back!
