Bumpy, rocky, exhilarating, and simple describe the experience on this Jericho Mountain Green Trail. Developed by off-roaders in conjunction with State Parks officials, this trail is made to challenge both vehicle and driver. Although the Green Trail East is the easiest of the trails in the park, it is not just a simple walk in the park. Strap in, hang on, and pay attention to your driving from start to finish.

Jericho Mountain State Park lists four color-coded trails by their difficulty levels. This is a green trail, according to the Park's signs. The Trails Offroad difficulty rating will show this as an "orange" trail on our map since it is rated a 3 by our standards.
The Park has the following rating system:
Green: Easiest. A lightly modified vehicle with at least 33" tires and a winch is recommended.
Blue: More Difficult: A modified vehicle with at least 35" tires, a locker, and a winch is recommended.
Black: Most Difficult. A heavily modified vehicle with at least 38" tires, a locker, and a winch is mandatory.
Red: Extreme. Custom-built vehicles with at least 40" tires, (2) lockers, (2) winches and a roll cage are mandatory.
While the Park shows only one green trail, we have separated the green trails into two sections, east and west. This trail guide covers the entrance and eastern end of the greens.
The Green Trail East (this trail) is the easiest of the trails in the Park. The easiest trail still has minor rock obstacles scattered from start to finish.
The Jericho Mountain Green Trail East is a dirt and granite rock trail within the forest of the Jericho Mountain State Park. The trail is a lollipop-shaped out-and-back trail in the designated 4x4 Off Road Trail area. Although Jericho Mountain State Park is an ATV-friendly park, ATVs and side-by-sides are not allowed on the Green Trail East.
This technical trail will require understanding vehicle lines and tire placement. This trail is suitable for high clearance 4WD vehicles with a low range transfer case and drivers with some experience with negotiating large rocks.
1. Trailhead (0
mi)
After getting your permit from the Visitor's Center, go through the gate, and begin the trail by veering to the left. The trail on the right is the Black Trail. Be sure to close the gate behind you to help keep ATVs from accessing the restricted zone.
2. Black Trail - Veer Left (0.16
mi)
A segment of the Black trail intersects here on the right. While the green trail can be traveled in either direction, the Black Trail and the Blue Trail are one-way counterclockwise directional trails. Veer to the left to stay on the Green Trail East.
3. Black Trail Connector - Veer Left (0.21
mi)
Another segment of the Black Trail heads to the north here. There is also an exit for the Blue Loop 2 at this same location on the right. Veer left for Green Trail East.
4. Blue 1 Exit/Blue 2 Enter - Keep Left (0.25
mi)
There are two short Blue Trail loops in the vicinity on the right. The Blue Loop 1 exits onto Green Trail East, while the Blue Loop 2 entrance are found at this point. Keep left to remain on Green Trail East.
5. Blue 1 Enter - Keep Left (0.28
mi)
The Blue Loop 1 Trail begins on the right here. Keep left for Green Trail East.
6. Three Red Extremes - Keep Straight (0.31
mi)
There are three extreme obstacles on the right, one after another, and are the Park's Red Trails. These trails are well marked, and it is easy to see why they are rated as extreme. Keep straight for Green Trail East.
7. Black Trail Exit - Keep Right (0.35
mi)
A segment of the Black Trail rejoins the Green Trail East and is marked as "Do Not Enter." Keep right.
8. Jericho Green Trail West - Turn Right (0.41
mi)
The Jericho Mountain Green Trail West continues straight at this Waypoint. The Green Trail West is slightly more difficult than the Green Trail East. To finish the Green Trail East, make a sharp right turn.
9. Black Trail Exit - Continue Straight (0.44
mi)
A segment of the Black Trail exits onto the Green Trail East here. It is marked "Do Not Enter." Continue straight. The trail on the left is where the Green Trail East will terminate in a few minutes. Proceed forward through the loop to finish the trail.
10. Black Trail Crossing - Keep Straight (0.49
mi)
The Black Trail again crosses here. Continue straight.
11. Trail Rocks - Keep Straight (0.6
mi)
Some large rocks are found in the middle of the trail. One in particular is a "poser" rock. The only option available is to go over the rocks. Keep straight.
12. High Center - Keep Straight (0.65
mi)
A little drop-off where rocks cross the trail could cause a stock vehicle to scrape rock rails or undercarriage. This obstacle should not pose a significant issue. Keep straight.
13. Black Trail Crossing - Keep Straight (0.79
mi)
A final crossing of the Black Trail occurs here. Continue straight.
14. Trail Ends - Veer Right (0.92
mi)
The trail ends where it rejoins the Green Trail East at Waypoint 9. You must follow the Green Trail East to the entrance gate to exit the 4x4 Off Road Trail.
Improved
No camping is allowed on the trail itself. Designated camping is available at Jericho Mountain State park, but getting a reservation can be difficult since it is usually booked weeks out. Milan Hill State Park and Moose Brook State Park are nearby and have camping. There are several hotels in Berlin, NH, and Gorham, NH, where lodging can be found, such as the Top Notch Inn.
Starting Point
Berlin, New Hampshire
Take Jericho Lake Road northwest from Berlin for 4.5 miles. The Jericho Mountain State Park is on your left (west) and is well marked. Drive into the park to the Visitor's Center for trail check-in.
This was a fun loop to take, much more relaxed than the other green section. I would recommend this to anyone looking to dip their toes into very minor rock crawling. If you like this one, and want more, take on the Green Trail West!
This trail was the easiest one inside the Jericho Mountain State Park Jeep Trail. Although I think that a stock vehicle can complete this trail, There are still areas when a stock vehicle will scrape rock-rails, shock mounts and diffs. The park requires a 33" minimum tire size for the green trails. I concur that what it will take to avoid damage to vehicles. The other trails require different, more capable modifications. If you have the green trail minimum vehicle requirements, you can enjoy a challenging experience that can be exhilarating.
