A few miles north of the mountain lake community of Lake Arrowhead you will find Willow Creek Jeep Trail. This trail is amongst a network of OHV routes in the San Bernardino mountains in the San Bernardino National Forest. As you travel across this trail you begin to notice the forrest environment on the south slowly fade toward a hinting desert landscape on the north. This is most prominent as you pass 3W13 (waypoint 9) and turn to the north.
Along the trail you will make two creek crossings ; willow creek and little bear creek. Both crossings are over concrete-slab fords.
The east end of 3N34X (way point 27) offers the most fun of this trail for the adventurous offroader. This rutted, rocky hill was fun enough for us to run it up and down.

Willow Creek Jeep Trail is the west end of the Crab Flats OHV trail, 3N34, in the San Bernardino National Forest, north of Lake Arrowhead. When this trail is run from west to east, it leads into Dishpan Springs. Willow Creek can be combined with Cleghorn Ridge , Pilot Rock, Dishpan Springs and 3N16 for an overland mountain trek across the San Bernardino mountains with minimal pavement contact.
This trail is mostly easy, with short moderate sections. Though some sections are marked as black diamond ratings, a moderate blue is more accurate for these sections and an easy green is accurate for most of the trail.
The short section of 3N34 between waypoints 14 and 15 is also known as Ash Meadows Road. The 2.5 mile long section of 3N34 from waypoint 17 through 24 is also known as Squint Ranch Road.
This is a great trail for beginners who are looking to try a little more than a fire road.
**Permit information:**
A permit (forest adventure pass) is not required to run this trail. It is only needed if you park at an area with improved facilities; toilets, picnic tables, fire rings. The Splinters Cabin Picnic Area, at the end of 3N34C (Waypoint 22), off the south end of this trail, or the Pinnacles OHV Staging Area at Waypoint 2, are examples of where you should have an adventure pass.

Directly off CA-173, the trailhead is well marked with signage for Willow Creek Jeep trail, 3N34 and Pinnacles OHV staging area.
2. Pinnacles OHV Staging Area (0.42

Pinnacles OHV staging area includes a large parking area, tables with shade and vault toilets. Parking here requires a Forest Adventure Pass ; $5/day or $30/year.
3. 3N34X West Intersection (0.49
mi)
This is the west intersection of 3N34X. Notice the "X "at the end of the route number. Left will take you on 3N34X which is the harder, northern loop of Willow Creek Jeep Trail. Right will keep you on the easier route; 3N34 (no "X").
Either way is still Willow Creek Jeep Trail. The trails meet again at waypoint 5; 3N34X east intersection.
The mile markers for the following waypoints are based on going right at this point.
If you choose to go left, waypoint 25 is next.
4. 3W65 Intersection (1.77

3W65 is limited to vehicles with a maximum width of 50". No jeeps are allowed on 3W65. Stay left to continue on 3N34.
5. 3N34X East Intersection (2.2
mi)
At this point you should stay to the right to continue forward on 3N34.
Left will take you on 3N34X; the harder, northern loop of Willow Creek Jeep Trail, which will land you back at waypoint 3 once you pass through waypoints 27, 26 and 25.
6. Big Turnout (2.39
mi)
This is a good spot to stop for a break and enjoy the scenery. There is plenty of room for vehicles to park at this location.
7. Left Right Option (2.44
mi)
Here you can take your pick; left or right. Either option keeps you on the trail and takes you to the Willow Creek crossing.
8. Willow Creek Crossing (2.51
mi)
The concrete pad here makes for an easy crossing over Willow Creek.
9. 3W13 Intersection (2.63
mi)
Here you will have to keep left to continue on 3N34. 3W13 is limited to vehicles with a maximum width of 50".
10. Ice Mocha (2.95
mi)
When wet, this lower section of the trail collects 15" plus of icy water mixed with the earth, resembling a tasty caffeinated beverage. While there is a shallow bypass to the side of this icy slurry, it's hard to resist making a splash in the deep end.
11. Small 2x Turnout (3.24

This small double turnout provides enough space for a few vehicles to park on each side of the trail.
12. Rocky Hill (3.45

The rocks on this short uphill section can easily be avoided by smaller vehicles.

This point of the trail includes a cute little rock collection that might make a fun obstacle when it grows up :) .

Turn right here to stay on 3N34. An optional detour to the left will take you on 3N38, by the locked gates at the Lake Arrowhead Airport and then loop you back around to waypoint 17.

Turn right to stay on 3N34. The optional detour to the left will take you on 3N38, by the locked gates at the Lake Arrowhead Airport and then loop you back to the west to waypoint 15.

Stay right to continue on 3N34. Signs mark this section of 3N34 as "most difficult", but it is no harder than the rest of the trail.
A left here will take you on 3N34**D** to Devils Hole.
19. Lunch Loop Turnout (5.78
mi)
This small loop allows for parking half a dozen or more vehicles and is a good place to stop for lunch or to enjoy the scenery.
Continue straight at this point to stay on 3N34. A hard left will take you to the Splinter's hiking trailhead.

The concrete pad here provides an easy path through the little bear creek.
24. End of the Trail / 2N26Y (7.56

From here you can continue straight to end your day on the trail. The road ahead is 2N26Y - Hook Creek Rd. which will lead you down the east side of Lake Arrowhead on your way out. If you haven't had enough yet, a hard left here will take you into Dishpan Springs (Extreme trail).

Here you will find a water tank and a small turn out.
This mile marker is based on starting from the trailhead and turning **left** at Waypoint 3 (3N34X).

This small turnout and tree make for a good place to stop and enjoy the view to the east.

If you like ruts and rocks mixed with your hills, you have come to the right place. This rutted, rocky hill might look intimidating, but it is no problem with the right line.

The North Shore Campground is the closest improved campsite, but this campground is only open from late April through early October. North Shore Campground has potable water and flush toilets. Fees are $23 per 1 vehicle for the night, however fees increase and a 3 night minimum is enforced on holiday weekends.

Did the trail west to east in a stock Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. Trail is way harder than what it says…. Gate at the end is locked so had to backtrack a bit… 4 low is useful as it saves your brakes…
This was a fun trail to do however be advised that the end of the trail is not open at the east end due to a locked gate. Had to backtrack and take Rouse Ranch Road 2N25 to get back to lake arrowhead. Completed the main trail in a stock 5th gen 4Runner and only had to use 4 wheel drive on the steep rocky hill in the beginning half of the trail. Definitely harder than the easy difficulty rating the trail is rated at…at least for a beginner like me. I’d rate this a moderate to hard trail for a beginner. Just pay attention to your lines and watch out for your clearance because there’s some big rocks that can hit the underside of your vehicle if it’s not lifted.
Trail was definitely harder than a 2/3 closer to a 4 in many places. Some of the steep terrain added with the large boulders made it fun but not what I was expecting for sure
There was a closed gate at the east end (just past Splinter's Cabin trailhead), so we couldn't exit after traveling west to east. We took Rouse Meadow to Rouse Ranch Road out instead. A few short portions of this trail seemed signed as black diamonds. While a few portions looked a little intimidating, we didn't have any substantial trouble with a lightly lifted 3rd gen 4Runner on A/Ts without lockers. Using the Cleghorn main trail as a reference for "2", this was somewhat harder.
Did this trail from the Pinnacles Staging Area. The bulk of the trail is slightly rocky, with the occasional deep ruts and a few small sections of massive whoops. Between waypoints 27 and 26, the trail is VERY rutted out and will definitely challenge your ability to pick a line and keep tires on the ground.
The Forest Service has temporary closed all of the National Forests in California. This closure will is from Aug. 31, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. through September 17, 2021 at 11:59 p.m.
Started at pinnacles staging area. Aired down and was on my way. Got to willow creek crossing and the fun started. From there on its ruts and rocks. Trail was dry with some loose dirt on inclines. Area got more technical then what I read but I'm still a novice. Ended up running short due to time and ended up taking ash meadows road/ 2n75 back in arrowhead. Took my subaru that's 1" lifted with ATs and skids plates (which I used a couple of times). Buddie took his 2wd f150 with locker. RE REVIEW : Took my 01 4x4 tahoe (2 inch lift and 33s) and trail was easier for a proper 4x4 vehicle. ened up going to 2w01 devils hole trail. thought i could make it to the bottom but bad call not waiting on my spotter. made it back up with some recovery rope. gate after little bear crossing was closed as well connector for 2n26y had to double back to 2n75 to get back in town.
Ran this trail after completing the Pilot Rock Truck Trail. New to off-roading, so it probably seemed more challenging to me that it actually is, but got through without much difficulty. A few of the rock gardens were more challenging than anticipated. The only issue was that when we got to the end of 2N26Y, the exit onto Hook Creek Road was blocked by a large impassable snow/ice mound left by a plow. So, we had to backtrack, and we exited via the Rouse Ranch Road Trail.
Started from trailhead as stated in description. Thinking that this was a thru route, however the gate 2n26y was locked making this an out and back trip. Combined this trail with Pilot Rock to make for a full day. Decent lift, tires and 4x4 recommended for rut hill. Lots of nice places for lunch.
I’ve been wanting to check this trail out for a while. It starts off easy but once you meet back up to 3n34x and continue on the trail, you come across more challenging obstacles. Small rock gardens and waterfalls made things a little more challenging than I expected but with the right lines you’re good. Best to go with a few rigs.
This is a very busy and popular trail. First couple of miles are easy and lots of scenic views, it gets challenging after that. Only made it to way point #9 about 2 1/2 miles in, and had to turn back. Gotta try this trail some other time. Did this trail with my small hatchback AWD with an inch of lift and AT Tires.
Accidentally took 3N34X out of Pinnacle staging area. Actually made things way more fun than we’d expected. Got some interesting looks being out there in a lifted Subaru but still a really good trail. Just take your time and choose lines wisely.
We came into 2N34 on the west end coming from Pilot Rock which is a nice combination for a morning drive and still have the afternoon for lunch and shopping in Lake Arrowhead. 2N34 like 2N33 has "Blue" rated OHV signage or "More Difficult" and I would say it achieves the rating but its not hard or dangerous nor are you at risk at any time of damaging your vehicle. It doesn't have the expansive views of 2N33 but in a capable vehicle its a very enjoyable forest drive. There are some steeper climbs that I was tempted to go into 4wd but as a test I kept the entire trail in 2wd and had no problems. The Alternate "X" route which I understand is more difficult is well marked and easy to avoid which I did. We finished the ride before noon and I did not encounter another vehicle in either direction but there is a very large flat staging area at the trail head that had some folks getting trailered OHVs ready.

This one was a fun challenging one for us newbs. We went left at the beginning and it was funnnnnnn lol. That was probably most extreme part for us with other fun hills.
As a mom, what makes me nervous is all the dirt bikers (understandably since there is a speciality road in the middle), so just be extra aware.
We stopped for lunch at the lunch loop. It was nice to explore a little and let the kids move around.
2N26Y - Hook Creek Rd. was closed and we weren’t ready for the extreme portion of the trail so we turned around and headed back.
If you’re a newb, definitely don’t go alone. Bring lots of water because it’s hot af if you’re exploring too. Lol
My mostly stock 05 z71 burb made it through this easy, I didnt air down from my usual city/highway 40psi, but got it in 4 lo for the 2 climbs, and drive the rest in 4 hi, it was her maiden voyage, I wanted to shake the rust off.
I did come down one hill a little too quick and cased my nerf bar, no damage, just a loud F&@K echoing across the canyon. easy beginner trail with 2 inclines/declines that will get you thinking. Seasoned offroaders can speed through this, I'm just getting back into it and will be having a lot of fun with this.
Note: The trail exit 2N26Y was closed. Because it was getting darker and I just wanted to do a quick trip with my daughter, I didn’t feel like finding an alt route and just out and backed it. Schmall kine annoyed. But this trail is probably awesome for first time off-roaders. It can teach you to pick your line, switch into 4lo, drive in da slippy condish, etc. lots of fun hills, water crossings, and schmmmmmaallll kine rocks. Lots of traffic on this trail. Probably ran into like 20 other vehicles. Stock with some clearance should be enough. Happy trails!
Wonderful trail first time out on it due to rain and snow this past week it made it more muddy slippery and the ruts are even deeper than normal. I went in my stock Nissan pro 4x never high center also did straight from point 3 qq3n34x and the rut hill was a challenge
Nice trail, I went to this trail after I did Pilot Rock and halfway down the easy side of the trail, there is a fallen tree that completely blocks the road.
First trip out with (my new) stock 2015 JKU Sport. We used 4x4 but probably could have done the entire trail without it. There are also maps in the box at the pinnacles staging area. There were a handful of green sticker only trails in the area and we shared the main trail with a few groups of two wheelers. Fun easy trail.
Just took my 2wd F150 up this beautiful trail. Some parts are challenging but with the right tires and speed you'll make it. You dont need a 4x4 for the most part, but a locker does help. Some hills are fun and side inclines are a blast, just dont flip it over. My friend took his 2wd tacoma as well and didn't have issues at all. We started at Pinnacles and exited off Ash meadows rd. It was a beautiful day at devils creek, but the 1/2 hike down is a good work out.
A beautiful, clear, crisp day north of Lake Arrowhead on Willow Creek Jeep Trail. Lots of fun water crossings which will decrease as the year progresses. GPX file proved very valuable to stay on route due to the many side trails, available from each trail write-up on trailsoffroad.
Stock 2016 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon - visiting friends in Arrowhead. Had to show them the Rubicon! First on-my-own 4x4 trail. Took the trail east to west at dusk (Hook Creek Rd. to 173). Recent snows and rains made for MANY water pools and fun water crossings (mid wheel depth - be prepared for sandy mud! take the pools slow - no telling what is in there!). By the time we got to waypoint 27 (going uphill) (rut hill) it was dark - hill was rather challenging and fun in the dark and slightly muddy with a lot of loose rocks and dips (next upgrade may be a LED light bar on the front!). Engaged front and back lockers (with front sway bar disconnected) and the Jeep literally crawled up this hill like a tank - not a wheel slipping (thank you Jeep engineers!). I am hooked. Where is my next trail TrailsOffRoad!
