John is a Colorado native who's been 4 wheeling since he got his first tacoma. His original goal of 4 wheeling was to get back into the campsites the Subarus couldn't quite get to. One trip after another, and now it's pretty much consumed all of his free time. He is currently living in Laporte, CO. When he is not coding for Trails Offroad or 4 wheeling, he also enjoys hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, and mountain biking.

Elephant Hill (03/29/2023)
We went out to re-map Elephant Hill. It was my first time on this trail, and let me say, this is a must-do trail in the area. It has absolutely everything. Incredible scenery, fun obstacles, and awesome hiking opportunities. If you have had this trail on your bucket list, go take the time to do it. It is well worth the trip out to Canyonlands. I can't wait to run this trail again!
Box Canyon - Florence (01/23/2023)
This is one of my new all-time favorite trails. Arizona has a ton of offroading, and I have only scratched the surface, but I cannot wait to come back and take my wife with me. The geology was amazing, and meandering through the wash with high narrow walls to either side of you is an experience not found in many other places. I would highly recommend this trail to anyone!
Switzerland Trail (12/10/2022)
Went out with about 30 rigs today. The trail was completely passable. This trail is relatively level with no real off camber pitches making the icy spots safe and manageable.
Long Hollow Road (12/01/2022)

Moody Hill (11/12/2022)
I ran this trail for the first time after living in Fort Collins for the last six years, and I have to say, it's one of my new favorites. I am not much of a rock crawler personally, but I found the mandatory obstacles to be challenging with amazing views and superb dispersed campsites. I think Moody just made it to my once-a-year must-do trail list.
Potts Mountain Jeep Trail (11/05/2022)
WHAT A TRAIL!! This is what it's all about - camping, obstacles, mud, rocks, and water crossings. I had an absolute blast on Potts Mountain. If you have the rig to do it, this is an all-time trail. Why this isn't a Jeep Badge of Honor trail? I have no idea, but it should be. The obstacle at Waypoint 10 will undoubtedly be the biggest test for your rig. Call up your buddies and plan a weekend to do this. You won't regret it.
Stone Camp (11/02/2022)
This was easily my favorite trail we did in our exploration of Virginia. This is just one of those trails that has it all! I loved the rock obstacles and the scenery on either side was top-notch. The next time I find myself out east, I will make it a point to loop this trail in.
Union Springs (11/02/2022)
I found this trail to be rather average compared to a few other trails in the area. The one saving grace is that it takes you to Stone Camp, which is a MUST-DO trail in this area if you have the rig. Would I run this trail just to run this trail? No. Would I run it to access Stone Camp? All day long!
Flagpole Knob (11/01/2022)
I am a bit conflicted in writing this review. I think Flagpole is a must-do trail if you have never done it. The view from the top is absolutely incredible. However, the trail is very easy so expect to see a lot of people. The amount of illegal off-trail paths nearing the summit was disheartening to see as well. I also found it a bit weird that people left memorials of their family and friends who have passed in such a spot with the potential for disrespect/vandalism.
Skidmore Fork/Dunkle Hollow Road (11/01/2022)
I liked this trail up until the rocky, shelfy, off-camber portion that never seemed to end. Just rocky enough to be tiring, but not in a fun or challenging way. The reservoir at the bottom was awesome, but I can see that getting very busy. I would definitely recommend this trail for someone new to offroading, but I found Stone Camp to be the most interesting way up to the Flagpole Knob area.
Rausch Creek Off Road Park: 11 (10/29/2022)
Trail 11 was one of my favorite trails at Rausch Creek. It had just a little bit of everything. I would recommend this trail to anyone new to offroading and looking to test their skills!
Rausch Creek Off Road Park: Crawler Ridge (10/28/2022)
If you have a purpose-built rig, this little section of trail should be on your to-do list. For me as a basic wheeler who loves to get as far out and as remote as possible, I didn't really care much for this trail/obstacle. However, it was very cool to see what a built rig can do.
Rausch Creek Off Road Park: Crawl Daddy (10/28/2022)
Crawl Daddy was a blast. We technically did not go up "Crawl Daddy" - the signs made that very apparent, but the bypass to the top provided a good challenge for the 2 door on 37s. I'd recommend this trail to anyone running 35's or larger who loves to challenge their skills and vehicle.
Gulches ORV Park: Palmetto Krawler (10/14/2022)
Out of all the trails in The Gulches, I enjoyed this one the most. The off-camber obstacles and the rutted, trenched trails definitely added a bit of excitement. I didn't find this trail to be very tough either in our JLU Rubicon. I had a blast and I would recommend this trail to anyone!
Gulches ORV Park: Trail 1 (10/14/2022)
Honestly, I wouldn't take my review seriously as I am not the clientele this ORV park is catered to. If you have a built rig and you seriously enjoy offroading, I can see this park being a 5-star network of trails. But if you are an overlander who just uses their rig to get away from the Subarus to find an epic remote campsite, this won't be your cup of tea. Regardless of my whining, I still had a fun time watching our Jeeps flex through the obstacles in this park.
Gulches ORV Park: River Road (10/14/2022)
This was one of my favorite trails at the Gulches and I was blown away by the harder trails that you see along the way. I could see a highly modified rig/buggy having a blast out here!
Gulches ORV Park: Trail 14 (10/14/2022)
This was my least favorite trail in the suggested easy loop. Since the blue trails aren't too tough (we just didn't know what to expect so we stayed on the greens), I would recommend bypassing this trail and taking Palmetto Krawler out, which was much more enjoyable.
Gulches ORV Park: Arrowhead Alley (10/14/2022)
This trail was very short but also, really fun to watch the Jeep's solid axle flex through the ravines. Stay on top of the highest points to make sure you don't get high-centered!
Slab Pile (10/12/2022)
This trail was rather..."meh". I ran it once to say that I did it, but wouldn't go back. The other trails in the area provided much more interesting experiences.
Wolf Den (10/12/2022)
This trail had a really fun optional obstacle and some great camping, otherwise, it is relatively boring. We just used it to connect a few other trails in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to just run this trail.
Rocky Mountain Loop (10/12/2022)
We ran this trail twice to map it correctly, and honestly, I found this trail to be a really fun time. The camping was spectacular along this trail and the mandatory obstacles still provided us some challenge. I could see a built rig having a blast on the optional obstacles.
Falls Dam (10/11/2022)
This was a fun trail at Uwharrie but not nearly the best IMO. The mud pit I am sure is a fun spectator event in the wet months as it is DEEP. I would suggest this trail to access Dickey Bell and still wanting to stay on a trail vs a maintained dirt road. The camping was not bad along the way.
Dutch John (10/11/2022)
This trail was another great trail to explore in Uwharrie. Not a ton of challenge but the leaves changing colors were a real treat when we went. It was crazy to see how deep the walls are on the steep incline portion and that the trail at one point was at the elevation of the surrounding walls. I would recommend this trail to anyone.
Dickey Bell (10/11/2022)
I really had no idea what to expect along this trail but let me just say, pictures just never do it justice. We ran this with a stock JLU Rubicon and a JLU Rubicon with a 2.5" lift with 35's. Both rigs took the easiest lines of the harder line choices (not the bypasses, which were hard in their own right). Both rigs used lockers to get up and over. The tension was palpable spotting both rigs up to the top, but the feeling of joy and satisfaction was overwhelming as we neared the top. This Jeep Badge of Honor trail is not to miss! I had a great time. As an avid camper, this trail fit all the bills with some nice camp spots to boot. I would recommend this trail to anyone looking to take their wheeling to the next level!
Bald Mountain Jeep Trail aka Big Levels (10/04/2022)
This trail was the first trail we ran in Virginia. Coming from the west, where wheeling is plentiful, I found this trail to be absolutely incredible. Lots of good challenges, great views, awesome camping, and overall, just a great trail all around. I would recommend this trail to anyone looking for some technical overlanding in this area. I can't wait to run this trail again!
