3N61 - Jacoby Canyon

Big Bear Lake, California (San Bernardino County)
Last Updated: 03/18/2023

Trail Information

Highlights

***The trail is currently closed due to the Holcomb Fire, please reach out to the Forest Service if you are planning on running this trail for more details on when it will reopen (909) 382-2790 (voice)*** Jacoby Canyon is a great intermediate trail on the backside of the Big Bear Mountain range. While on the trail, expect a scenic drive through what was once a lush forest, dried up streams, and lots of fresh mountain air. Some used this trail as a shortcut to quickly access Holcomb Valley from Lucerne versus driving up and around the mountain on Highway 18. Unfortunately, the trail has been closed to the Holcomb Fire.

Checked out the upper gate near the Doble Mine. It was closed. I also contacted the VP of the 4x4 club that has adopted the trail, the Gad-Zuks. Sounds like there are both serious erosion issues due to runoff from the fire denuded hills as well as many hundreds of burned hazard trees that need to be dropped for public safety. Here is an excerpt from the email with the club VP. "Jacoby has had some serious issues due to the fire. Jacoby shortly after the fire became a Black Diamond trail which they then ran a blade through. Then the whole trail you could drive a car through it. But more run off has created more issues making the trail not drivable. Hundreds if not a few thousand dead tree’s need to come down as well."
