Black Hills Backcountry Byway (02/11/2023)
Very easy trail, never left 2wd. However, the views were great. If you have the time, it is a good way to break up the drive from Morenci to Safford. If there has been a lot of rain some of the steeper hills might require 4x4 to get up. the road is well maintained by BLM..
Box Canyon - Florence (01/28/2023)
This is a great trail. Overall the beta and rating are spot on and similar to the 3-Moderates found in southern AZ. There was running water this weekend which made it enjoyable. One of my new favorites for scenry and geology in one trail. Try this trail now, I bet it is dusty in the summer months.
Martinez Canyon Road (01/28/2023)
This trail has some amazing views and tured out to be more difficult than we expected. We ran into several groups of SxS and Jeeps local to this area who said this trail has increased risk from the shelf road washouts and the obstacles have increased in difficulty and quantity. It sounds like the summer monsoons and heavy winter rains have deteriorated the trail a bit. We ran box canyon before this trail and they are both rated a level 3. If i were to use box canyon as the metric for a 3 then this trail would be harder, probably a 4 (maybe 5???, maybe not). I am new to the rating metrics in the cental AZ area.
Fish Canyon (11/19/2022)
This is a great scenic trail. The monsoons have made it more interesting but still spot on for difficulty. Low clearance vehicles will have to pay attention to which line they pick. Get a late start with a bunch of friends, bring some food an swap some good stories at then end of the trail. Or, connect any one of the other trails to the north and make for an interesting day with great scenic views. This is one of my favorite trails south of Tucson.
Gardner Canyon Road (11/19/2022)
This is a wonderful graded dirt road, high clearance and 4wheel drive not necessary. Apache Spring Ranch is beautiful, luck person who owns that! Quick way back out to 83. We did the whole trail in 2WD.
