My Trail Reviews (107)
(within last 6 months) As others have reported, this road is temporarily closed. We are looking for more information as to a possible re-open.
The temp closure was lifted.
The trail was listed as impassable by the Park due to ice in the shadow sections, it is now listed as passable with mud.
The rock formations through 4-7 were fascinating. I also enjoyed the very far end past Olla Wash, which seemed like it didn't get as much traffic and was very interesting.
What a hidden GEM!!!! I ran this after Pinyon Mountain, and honestly, I could have spent all day on Hapaha Flat. I am sure with a little more time and exploring, one could find some really neat things out there! The landscape is striking, and it has plenty of Ocotilla and Agave on it.
Really glad I did this trail! I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about Heart Attack Hill and worried about fitting the JL with an Ursa Minor Top through the Squeeze, but good spotting got me through. The views leading up the Canyon were spectacular as it was green, the campsites looked amazing, and coming down from Heart Attack Hill to Hapaha Flat was even better. I would recommend this one to anyone, but don't do this one alone, you will feel really out there, and spotting is going to be really helpful through the Squeeze.
If off-camber shelf roads that are a little rutted are not your thing, avoid this road lol. The first half is up a rutted shelf road and off-camber in spots. Once you crest and start working your way back down towards Banner, you are met with oak trees! Overall, it's a good trail, but this one may get on your nerves if you don't like shelf roads.
I had to try, and yes, the view is great looking into the Badlands; however, I liked Vista del Malpais a bit better since it was not as crowded.
Closed for the season. The trail will open back up in March. See you all then!
The weather closure is now lifted.
Closed temporarily due to ice.
I drove this road a few days before Christmas and had it to myself. I always find this road to be relaxing and an easy way to get from area of Moab to another. Please note, I changed the guide to reflect current conditions.
Closed temporarily due to icy conditions.

Seriously one of my favorite spots for sunset
Impassable for the season for 4WD.
I picked a terrible day to drive this road weather-wise, as a hurricane was coming up from Florida and directly into this area. I had a few hours before the bulk of the rain started dropping. The good news is that I could get into all but one of the campsites because there was not a soul on the road. I would imagine the views are stunning on a clear day, so I will have to go back, darn!
This a neat little trail! I don't think it deserves the Most Difficult Double rating, as really a good driver in a stock vehicle could accomplish it. Just a little on the short side!
I am giving this a higher star rating for the scenic value, not the wheeling. Its a tame road, but it is unique in this park section. I would recommend at least checking it out!
If I rated all the green trails separately, I would say the section that follows trail 20 would be the best. The entire route, though, felt a little long and repetitive. I enjoyed the whole route, but the blues and the blacks in the park are way more interesting.
Loved this one! Super fun wheeling with unique obstacles, and the Cooler... well it doesn't get much more cool than ice-cold air blowing out the side of the mountain!
FYI: Shafer Trail Road will close for required maintenance November 7–8 (Monday through Tuesday).
This was an absolute blast. At one point, I saw John's blue 2 door climbing over an obstacle, and with the naked trees, I could see he had only about 10-15' of either side of him where the terrain went straight down. Following the razer edge, the rocks and water holes made this trail very exciting!
The ridgeline at the top, I thought was awesome, and the hill climbs to get to it were fun. If you liked Skidmore Fork/Dunkle Hollow, you will probably like this one too, and its a bit smoother. Combing this with Stone Camp, and Flagpole Knob will make for one very epic trip!
5-stars for the view from the knob, but two stars for the trail. The trail was fairly boring. If you want to see the knob and take a more exciting way in, try going in via Dunkle Hollow or Union Springs to Stone Camp!
Driving it as written in this guide, once past the lake, the trail turns really nice, more of a two-track and narrow road with tons of camping and opportunities to see running water. The climb out of the hollow seems to take forever, and it's narrow and slightly off camber with small embedded rocks sticking out. The terrain change is pretty striking as you climb out, and fall is probably the best time to really see it.
Super fun trail and very scenic. We ran it twice while visiting the park. The JL on 37s had zero issues on this trail. The twisty obstacle was the fun!
Loved every minute of this trail. The fog and late fall foliage added a whole new ambiance to the trail.
Tough tough tough but a rock crawlers dream with all the options!
For a short trail, its a blast! We took a 2023 JL with a 2.5" lift and 37s up this trail. We couldn't complete the obstacle, but the bypass was still fun and challenging.
What a fun exploratory route through the park! There are other more challenging aspects on this loop we didn't get to try due to the weather, so I look forward to returning when it's dry!
We enjoyed a quick romp through the north 60, which is a new portion of the park. You can choose from mild to wild on this route! The Catwalk and Troubled Road were my favs!
Still issues from the monsoon damage: Washout on east side of Paiute Range (35.0905677, -115.0028316) make road impassible to all vehicles. Basically: CLOSED at Soda Lake and Paiute Gorge. Other portions of the road are open.
I can't believe I have never driven this road until now. After visiting all the points along the Green River in the north, we took this road to move further south and check out the river from those points. This road was a nice surprise. It is one of the few roads in the Labyrinth Rim area where you can be in the trees. You can see the recent rains have really rough the trail up.
The upper gate closes on 10/15/22.
We have updated the rating to better reflect the current conditions. It is going from a 3-3 to a 4-5. A new and updated trail guide for this will also be coming out by 10/30/22. Otherwise, air those tires down and enjoy before all the snow flies!
The slide has been cleared and open all the way through now.
Be advised:
Shafer Trail Road will close for routine maintenance October 24–27, October 31–November 3, and November 7–10 (Mondays through Thursdays). During this time, the road will reopen for public use at 4 pm Thursdays and remain open through weekends, closing again at 7:30 am Monday morning.
open via Potash or Shafer Trail Road only; closed via Mineral Bottom Road. Expect delays and large equipment on the west side as road crew makes repairs (October 11-14 and 17-20). Exercise caution and expect more difficult than normal driving conditions due to mud and washouts
