I moved to Arizona in 1984 and bought my first offroad vehicle the next year. I had lots of adventures, seeking out the Old West on paper topo maps in my Toyota FJ40 and can say, fortunately, that I never had to walk home. In 2005 I saw the prototype for the FJ Cruiser, and in the middle of my FJ40 resto project, someone came into my garage with cash and bought it out from under me. (Some regrets) In 2008, I flew out to LA to pick up my FJ Cruiser, special ordered with the Offroad Package (Locker) and MT6. My area of operations has been Southern Arizona, from the New Mexico to California borders. Unfortunately, the FJ Cruiser burned in a fire in August 2020. Now I'm building up from the ashes, literally, salvaged parts from the FJ are going on my Lexus GX470. SO, that's what's coming out next. I have been an active member of AZFJ.org where I'm the top post contributor, and have many trail reviews posted there that I plan on enhancing, revisiting and documenting for this authoritative source. I have a login to Ih8Mud and fjcruiserforums but don't lurk there very much. in my career, I've had the pleasure of traveling in Canada, the Caribbean, and Australia but never had the opportunity to wheel there. (bucket list). But, I hope my 30 years of Southern Arizona discovery, teaching and leading people into the backcountry will finally benefit a wider audience here on Trailsoffroad. There's nothing I enjoy more than finding a historic site, a little-used trail that had significance or the opportunity to take that one photo that defines what we do. (I stink but I'm willing to learn). Oh..Added benefit...I'm the GIS analyst for a fire dept and as such have some skills in ArcGIS.

My 2008 "Phoenix" is the updated version of my FJ Cruiser. When my FJ burned, I salvaged the Front and Rear Diff's[w/ e-Locker], the Rear Diff Skid, the Total Chaos UCA's, the Icon 3" Suspension, and my OME 885 rear springs. I upgraded the front springs to 700#. The Factor 55 winch thimble survived too, probably because it fell to the ground when the rope burned. I salvaged some interior items as well, including the RAM tablet mount, and the Dometic 65CFX Refrigerator. Now I have added: RCI Aluminum Engine, Transmission & Transfer case skids Ironman Front Bumper Ironman 12,000# winch w/synthetic rope BFG KO2 285/75/17 tires. Method 305 wheels in Silver. (Bronze was just too dark). I also added my ARB 2500 Awning to the Driver's side of the rack. Handy to hang the tent room off of when Overlanding. I've taken it out a couple of times including on Imogene in CO, Silver Basin in CO and recently on Telegraph Canyon. It's obvious that I need to wire and restore the e-Locker as a Center Diff Locker is nice, but not as beefy as locked rear wheels. Stay tuned.

My Trail Reviews (4)

(within last 6 months)
Arroyo Tapiado (02/20/2023)
Very scenic big wash trail. It got very interesting by the Mud caves. I've never seen so many land cruisers outside of the overland expo! Very crowded place on a Saturday. We ran into over 100 other rigs, from built over landers to family vans up here.
Anza Borrego Metal Sculptures (02/20/2023)
Not really an off-road trail but very worthwhile none the less. Lots of cool sculptures to see. Most you can drive right up to, but not the dragon any longer
Short Wash (02/20/2023)
This was an out of the way link between two big washes. There were a couple of overlanders camped out here but we found a flat spot just before the trail dropped down into the high wall canyon. ( We ran this backwards) Nice view over the Salton Sea to the east. I gave it a harder rating because the road down to Waypoint 2 from Waypoint 3 is washed out a little.
Font's Point (02/18/2023)
Awesome high speed Baja run to the point with the sun setting. Truly one of the finest views in California. Lots and lots of people there at Sunset. Barely found a parking spot. All kinds of vehicles braved the deep sand to catch the retreating day. There was even some models plying their trade on the cliffs.
