Nestled a few miles west of Boulder Colorado, Switzerland Trail is an easy outing for an afternoon getaway. Nearly the entire route is a shelf road offering spectacular views of the nearby foothills and the snow-capped peaks to the west. The trail has only slight grades as it follows an old railroad route from Sugarloaf Mountain to the community of Gold Hill. Because Switzerland Trail is open year-round, It can be a popular spot for those who partake in snowy driving adventures.

Trail Difficulty and Assessment

Trail Navigation

Switzerland Trail is a dirt and rock road that follows an old railroad bed through the foothills west of Boulder. There are no obstacles necessary to complete the route and because the trail follows the railroad route, the road grade is very gradual with no steep climbs. The route is a shelf road for nearly its entire route; However, finding a place to pass on-coming vehicles is generally easy. There are some locations where passing others would be impossible. Although the trail is bumpy in spots because of the protruding granite, the rocky conditions can be conquered by most vehicles. There is one optional vertical rocky climb at Waypoint 2 that would be a challenge for stock high-clearance vehicles. Switzerland Trail is open year-round and is often a popular destination for snow wheeling. Remember the trail is a shelf road for nearly its entire length with limited ability to turn around on the trail if snow conditions become impassable.

Good trail, still some snow where the trail starts. Everything is passable, but would recommend 4x4. It’s rutted out pretty good from the snow melt, but completely doable. Overall, took around 1.5-2 hours to complete. Good introductory trail for beginners like me.

Open between Sugarloaf Mountain and Pennsylvania Gulch, no problem. Did not continue as we tried Pennsylvania Gulch and that's not currently passable. Or at least not without a lot of winching and pretty slippery, with risk of sliding into trees.

I can only repeat the previous review by Lalo Maritinez, since we were wheeling together. Even though the snow can still be a bit of a challenge, Switzerland trail is a great experience! Don't underestimate the slope between waypoint 2 and 3, especially going uphill (reverse direction)! The 11.3 inches of ground clearance in my Grand Cherokee Trailhawk weren't enough not to get high-centered after an unfortunate line choice. Thanks to the guys in the side-by-sides for pulling me out!

This trail was a great time. There was snow on about 50% of the trail, there was only one spot that we found tricky on the downhill after waypoint 2, there was a very large accumulation of hard packed snow which made it difficult for quite a few vehicles. Main issue was mostly getting high centered on 9+ inches of hard packed snow. We had a Jeep get high centered on that obstacle as well as my Subaru, we even had to help a modified jeep get rolling again and they even had chains up front. Carrying some more momentum and picking a better line would have probably been good, however we all eventually managed to get through with the help of some other folks on the trail that gave us a pull. After that, the trail was smooth sailing, with beautiful views. Will definitely be going back

I made a quick lap last night. Snow was covering most of the trail, but not too deep. One of my favorite spots...we even did our Engagement photos at Mount Alto. Such a great trail, and such a great area.
