Webster Pass is perhaps the best-known and certainly most traveled of the three main passes between Summit County and Park County. It connects to two very popular, very challenging 4WD trails, Red Cone and Radical Hill. The summit, above 12,000 feet, offers spectacular views of both counties and a great vantage point to watch rigs descending the white-knuckle ride down from Red Cone.

Trail Difficulty and Assessment

Trail Navigation

Webster Pass is a relatively easy 4WD road. From the north, there are not any serious obstacles other than one stream crossing that, during Spring runoff, will test the door seals of stock trucks. Just south of the summit, there is an extremely narrow section with a startling 300 foot drop off. The Forest Service recommends that this section not be attempted by "full-size vehicles." The driver of any sized vehicle had better be on point. It would be a good idea to send a spotter ahead on foot to check for fresh rock fall or washouts and to stop any oncoming traffic. You do not want to have to reverse through the narrows. Beyond the narrows, the south side is quite tame. The difficulty rating of 4 (Moderate) is based on the deep water crossing (waypoint 6) and the narrows (waypoint 10), neither of which have a bypass. The rest of the trail is easy. Cell phone signals are spotty at best throughout the trail. The nearest emergency room is at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center (970-668-3300), located just off CO-9 south of Frisco. Summit County Sheriff office (970-453-2232) is on CO-9 in Breckenridge.

We did the pass in the snow. It was beautiful but the narrows were terrifying with snow you have to push through. I do not recommend it when there is big snow drifts on the narrows. Other than that we really enjoyed the trail.

Awesome Trail with a little bit of everything. Big alpine, woods, shelf road, water crossings. Trail was in great shape. Some of the river crossing were iced over in the morning but easily broken through. No snow up top on the summit. Open all the way through.

Great way to make an off road connection from 285 to I-70 with the option to take advantage of some isolated camp spots along the way, very few were occupied. Even Handcart CG at the South TH was empty. On a peak fall Friday, we only encounterd 1 ATV on the South slope and 3 Landcruisers on the North slope. Had the top to ourselves, beautiful views, North and South. Trail begining from the South at Handcart Campground starts off densly wooded, then opens up prior to the switchbacks. The Narrows has one spot where knuckles get white, and the wider your vehicle the whiter your knuckles. Would not attempt in a Raptor or simular width vehicle. The North side is an easy desent, beautiful valley on into Montezuma which is a culture all to its own. Fall color is best on the South side with the greater number of aspens.

Ran Webster this morning after camping nearby and didn’t run into anybody until after the summit (I ran it from the south to the north so I was going up the narrow portions). The entire trail is in great shape and the views are fantastic. I’ve now done Webster in both directions and I think going north to south is better (aside from having to back up the narrows should you have to - that would suck).

This time of year none of the water crossings were an issue at all. I agree it's best if you can send someone ahead down the narrows so you won't have to back up. If you do, this trail is a solid 3.
